I wish the dealerships would read this forum. Most all the people on here will take a V10 over the V8 but there are not any V10's on the lots around my area anywhere. Dosen't make any sense. I hope to be ordering a F250 this week with the V10 though I have never driven one. Good luck on your choice !!
The V-10 will require higher gears to tow the trailer ( keeping the V-10 in its torque range) versus the diesel. This will decrease your fuel economy in the V-10 with 4.30 ratio to about 8 mpg (right, guys?) The V-10 will be screaming, and you will have to use more throttle when towing. The diesel will act perfectly normal, like nothing is back there..

The V-10 will be perfectly fine with the load you are talking about. It will not be screaming. The MPG of my 5.4 is about 8 MPG and you will be looking at about 8 to 9 MPG towing 6000 up. Yes you will be able to tow it just fine and no it won't be screaming. Pulling that kind of load with my 5.4 at around 65 MPH with 3.73 gears not in overdrive I run about 2600 RPM's. Yes that's higher than normal everyday driving but it gets the job done. The V-10 would do it easier than the V-8 so I still would say go for it.
V-10 turns 2000rpm at 60mph with the 4.30's not screaming by any means. The diesel comes with the same tranny and the same gears as the gassers, so unless you are pulling a steep hill in second gear your rpms will be the same. The best you could every dream of getting with the V-10 is 14mpg on the highway with a tail wind and good luck, most guys get 10-12 not pulling anything, I as well as many other get 12mpg out of my V-8 SD.
Don't get me wrong with what I am going to say because I think the V10 is a great engine and would like to see it into a mustang at some point. One thing to consider when deciding which engine to purchase is the factory warranty. The PSD is warranted from the factory for 100k miles. You probably won't come close to that but think of it as insurance for as long as you are making payments. I own an 05 PSD and I am averaging about 18 to 20 mpg on the highway. That is nearly twice what the V10 with 4.30 gears gets. Your #7 (line 2) desires lead me to believe that the PSD is the way you need to go. I had a Mercury Marauder and got worse gas mileage than I get in my F250.
I hate to be the lone dissenter, but having towed thousands of miles with both the V10 and a 7.3, I wouldn’t choose the V10. Granted, I’m towing over 8000 lbs and carrying another 2000 lbs in the bed, but the V10 sucks more than gas. Its performance on hills is frustrating and I have to wring it out to maintain speed. The worst thing is the lack of range, stopping to fill up ever three hours (210 Miles) makes a long trip longer. I feel like I’ll be lucky to get 100K miles out of the V10 as hard as it has to work. The 7.3 has 180K miles on it now and kicks the V10s butt, and feels like new. You’ll never regret the PSD but if you are like me you’ll hate the V10. The PSD is worth every penny of the added 4-5 grand. I ordered a 2005 last month and should be getting it soon. Don’t want to offend any of you V10 owners, but I have strong feeling about this. Buy the way, I wouldn’t even consider the 5.4.
P.s. Around these parts, you can’t hardly give away a used V10 CC 4X4 while PSD’s draw good prices; so much so that it doesn’t make since to buy a used one.

I have a 99 F250 short Bed crew Cab with the V10. Unitl recently I pulled a 3000 pound boat with a slide in camper (2500 lbs) in the bed and I've never had an issue. I thought I'd have to take the slide in out to get the boat out of the water but it was never an issue. Before that combo I pulled a 25 ft camper with no issues. I'd save the money and stick with a V10.

I'm a V10 owner and my gas mileage sucks. Of course, adding a supercharger didn't help matters either, but that's ok, the added power is worth it. I get around 9.5 mpg around town and about 12.5 on the highway. I didn't buy my truck to have good gas mileage. If I wanted good mileage I would have bought a Volkswagon. We don't buy these trucks in the hopes of getting good mileage. I bought mine because I like big trucks, I've always had Ford trucks and will die owning a Ford truck. However, in terms of reliability and the best fuel economy, I would have to give my vote to the 6.0L Power Stroke. A buddy of mine has one and the mileage he gets for a truck of that size is unbelievable. Because of the higher rpm's the V10 pulls when under load as compared to the diesel it only stands to reason that the diesel is going to last longer. Diesels in general have a tendancy of being on the road for longer periods of time and have better resale value, that right there should tell you something. Both have their good points and bad points, one is not better than the other, it all comes down to personal preference, I prefer the V10. Just my $.02.
GO V-10. Your towing loads are not in excess of the V-10 'comfort' range and you will find that the V-10 is 'almost' as efficient as the deisel when towing. My buddies get 10-11 MPG pulling their 8000 lbs 5ther's and I get 8-9 mpg when towing the same 5ther. These motors are way more quiet than the PSD and on top it all, the V-10 LOVES to pull all day long. I pulled a trailer from 1,600 foot elevation to 8,000 foot elevation and did not notice any significant power loss.
PS- I make my trucks work likes trucks so my money is on the V-10, it has never been passed by a Chebby towing.
That said, buy as much truck as you can afford. The PSD will tow circles around the V10. No, you're not intending on towing a lot of weight, but your visions are such that there's room for bigger, badder, faster in the future. You'll never be disapointed in the PSD for power. The same torquesift transmission is available. And as for towing fuel economy, the diesel will always get better than the gas engine. And at altitude will always perform better.
Especially if you're gonna keep it for ten years. The diesel will retain much more value.
My last two trucks I've kept for 9-10 years each. Both big block Fords. I've switched to diesel and will never go back.
I drive my truck daily to the office too. 17mpg with mixed town/rural driving with a perfect running 04' F250SD LWB, 6.0psd and the manual 6spd. I love it! 19+mpg on the highway. You can't do that with a V10.

2003: 5.4 gas = 21,065; 6.8 gas = 21,685; 6.0 diesel = 26,245
2000: 5.4 gas = 13,155; 6.8 gas = 13,700; 7.3 diesel = 17,335
1996: 7.5 gas = 5,695; 7.3 diesel = 8,570
All with equal eqpt as follows (except for engine choice):
CREW CAB, 4X4, AUTO, XLT, A/C, PS, PW, PDL, TILT, CRUISE, AM/FM/CD, ABS, SLIDING REAR WINDOW, RUNNING BDS, BED LINER, TOW PKG, ALLOYS.
Prices also based on these mileage numbers (15K/year, subtracting from 2005):
2004 = 15K
2003 = 30K
2000 = 75K
1996 = 135K
So purely from a trade-in value, the diesel option will get you $2875 more after 9 years than the big gas engine. And $4800 after just one year. And
of course more than either of those numbers if you compare the small gas engine to the diesel.
