I have a 98 f150 4.6, 5-speed, with 35s, true dual no cats or muffler. It is screamingly loud. I had true dual straight pipes from my stock cats, but it wasnt loud enough for me. I didnt know it was going to be this loud..... I like it but i am scared to drive it around because i think ill get pulled over. I put mil eliminators so my computer is running fine.
If your driving on public roads, my suggestion is to be careful my friend.
At least 'round here, if your caught with a non-approved system (esp a basically open exhaust) you'll likely have your vehicle towed on the spot with some verification that the exhaust (and anything else non-legal) is up to snuff before they'd re-instate your registration. Several years ago they were even doing spot checks (i.e. pulling over random vehicles) and checking for all proper emission controls (especially exhaust, smog pumps, EGR systems, etc.). Not saying any of this is right or wrong, but the consequences can be ugly - and expensive.
Poor fella lives in the socialist republic of Mass-of-2-S*its, the 2 being the KKk wing of the senate Kennedy & Kerry. Just think, but for 537 votes in FL in 2000 and 115,000 in OH in 2004 we'd all be living under that tyranny. And then there’s the land of sun sand surf and no inspection of any kind. At least when I was there back in the 80’s.
So BPardo19, what are mil eliminators and where can I find them?

They replace the O2 sensors (since he did away with the cats) and trick the computer into thinking it still has cats. That way your CEL is not on all the time, so if something else triggers the light it will get your attention. You can pick them up at a speed shop or online parts shops.
Good to hear there are places left that aren't extreme, OK militant, when it comes to emissions (among other things)! I've even had an insp station wanting to fail my truck for having a ball hitch on the bumper - how dare I! I had to convince him I'd remove it as soon as I got home (which, of course, I didn't). Politically, I'm probably closest to a libertarian - yes, in Massachussetts (imagine Micheal Moore living with Jesse Helms). [Removing lead has been awesome for the environment huh, I'm sure the folks (heck, whole towns) who lost their drinking water due to MTBE are thrilled - I personally know more than several who basically had to leave their homes. New requirements for gas stations in MA are now imposed to require tanks be sealed in a concrete vault to prevent seepage of this stuff - stations are closing left and right - its too costly to install (its cheaper to build new if you can afford that).] BTW, if you have an older car designed without cats, the newer fuel formulations will actually generate a whole lot MORE emissions, esp NOx. Buy leaded gas - your classic car, and the environment, will thank you. Here, they're not supposed to put it directly into any road vehicle so I'm told, they may make you put it in a container first (when I buy for the MachI the attendent is looking around like we're criminals - which I guess we are to some). But I digress. . .
i'd use a 40 series muffler with a single in and dual out and the mil eliminators...my buddy is running the same set up and he loves it....loud and a nice rumble
97 4x4offroad 4.6 factory h pipe w/ all four cats flowmaster 40's 1 in 2 out
Has an awesome tone, is decenlty loud ... Obviously not nearly as loud as you would want though.
But in 4 lo draggin out a dodge it sounds soooooo goood, has a sweeeeet tone when 4x4 is enguaged
It's not a theory, it's a fact that an engine designed to function with mufflers and cats will burn the valves (some engines more and faster than others) when run with open exhaust. The exhaust valve timing is designed to use the backpressure created by the mufs & cats to slow the still burning exhaust just enough to not burn the valves as they open. Remove the backpressure and now the still burning exhaust comes out much faster raising the valve temp much higher and burning the valves.
