Valve cover gaskets

I have an 88 F150 4x4 with a 5.0. i have to change the valve cover gaskets. does anyone know any tricks, tips or hints?

the only think that comes to mind would be to use rubber gaskets insted of cork.
They cost alittle more but they are well worth it. I have always had trouble with cork wanting to smash out of cover,even when using the correct torgue spec.

I agree, the silicone rubber gaskets hold up far better than cork, especially when you have to remove your upper air intake to replace the right gasket.

Get the really expensive ones with the metal inserts around the bolt holes. You CAN'T squash them out.

If your valve covers are tin flip them upside down and use a ball peen hammer to tap the bolt holes back out since they are likely bent from the force of the bolts holding them down.

don't over tighten the bolts. if you are going to use short bolts; use a socket with a extension, no ratchet, and only get them hand tight. i used some of the long bolts and didn't need a socket for them.
again, the key is to not over tighten.
