No floor heat

2003 F-150 4x4 with electronic heat controls
While driving today, my (cold-blooded) better half noticed that her feet were still cold even after an hour or so with the heat on (I guess I'm just to oblivious to notice). Switching back and forth through the various selections (floor, vent, defrost, etc) it appears that a selection containing 'Floor' (alone or Floor+Vent, etc) sends the 'floor' heat to Defrost. Indicators in the LCD display are correct and there is plenty of hot air available (from the truck too). At first I thought it might be the floor 'flap'/motor/etc, but seeing that the defrost comes on (when it should be floor) this seems unlikely (?). Could it be the electronic unit itself? If so, could a 'manual' panel be installed in its place directly? (Being in the electronics mfg industry for many years I'm a strong believer in the KISS principle, something apparently forgotten in the 'high-tech', gee-wiz electronic systems of today.) Thanks.

Hey man, I had this same problem with my 97, my girlfriend kept bitching at me her feet were cold! We live in Saskatchewan and I guess she had a right too! Anyways i did some checking and all that was wrong with mine was a plug on the back of the floor heater piece was unplugged. Easy fix and happy girlfriend now!

Thanks for the replies - I'll check 'em both. In my case the floor 'signal' seems to be getting routed to defrost. If 'Floor' is selected, you get defrost; 'Floor&Vent' gives defrost and vent; 'Floor & Defrost' gives you just defrost. The temperature control works fine (the air temp is controlled and will get plenty warm) as does the AC, so I think the blend is working (?). I'll post what I find. . .

Sounds good man, I'm sure curious to see what it was, especially since I got really lucky and it was such an easy fix for me!

My '97 had a similar problem - turn on the A/C and when accelerating, air would go to defrost. Learned on this forum that defrost is default when there is no vacumn. Found a broken vacumn line just a few inches from the reservoir - this is one of the hard vacumn lines - clipped it back to good material and placed a piece of regular vacumn line over it for a patch. The problem on mine is that the reservoir is between the battery and the fender, so the line that broke is about 3" from the battery - acid can get to it. You may have a similar situation.

dlorenz,
Thanks for the info - this makes a lot of sense given the problem I'm seeing. Hopefully it is just a vac line. It also makes sense that its connected to a vac canister - I'm not sure where this resides on my truck, but I'll find it (I'll start where you mentioned). My guess is that there is one vac line that feeds solenoids (?) that control each outlet 'flap' (defrost, heat, vent). Could someone confirm the actual vac routing/connections and where they're physically located? Thanks again.

My '97 has a vacumn hose layout on top of the radiator shroud housing along with belt routing, etc. You may have the same on yours. As for the vacumn reservoir, it is black plastic and pretty well hidden behind the battery bracket.

Vac Diagram

There is a 'Vac Diagram' on the radiator support but its less than complete - it only shows about 6 connections and it didn't have the routing for the 4x4 solenoids either. My quess is that they include only engine required connections (EGR, vac sensor, etc.). [The one on the '85 GT was virtually packed - it was dang difficult just to follow a connection from one end to the other.] But we'll track it down. Still wondering how the vac is switched/routed to each flap for floor/vent/defrost. Thanks for the help!
