Hey Guys,
Looking to buying a 98' Ford Ranger ext-cab 4x4 auto w/ 4.0 w/ 60k but the chain in the tranfer case seems to be loose, you can feel it when you go to take off or stop. Is this issue a big concern, and about how much do you think it would cost to get fixed? Your imput would be greatly appreciated.
I would have to say that it is nearly (but not toatally) impossible for the t-case chain to slip. Those things are pretty massive chains, and i couldn't imagine how you could stretch one. Plus, if it was the chain, it would only do it in 4wd and not 2wd, because on a 98, the t-case chain is not moving while the truck is in 2wd. I agree with Ken that what you are hearing is more than likely the drive shaft slip-yoke thump thing. It seems that it is a fairly common problem, and a pretty easy fix. I think all it needs is just a re-lube. Search this forum, I know I've read about it many times.
