I've used Sta-Lube with good results, but I'm sure any brand-name is fine. One tip - change your oil and filter after 50-100 miles, as assembly lube tends to clog the filter.
I used the CRC stuff (with graphite and moly) and my engine runs fine. It's there for buildup and the initial cranking until oil gets there. I change oil right after the cam is broken in, then at 100 miles, then at 3000 miles, then every 3000 miles from there on.
Lubriplate 100 on cam, engine oil on bearings and rings unless it's a shelf engine that will sit for some time, then I use Lubrplate on everything. Lubriplate is high in zinc which
new cams need.
Usually new cams are supplied with their own lube from the manufacturer, which is high in moly content. If it is supplied with the cam, by all means use it.
lubriplate works great, and GM sells an additive called EOS which is a great assembly lube. In every (no exceptions ) case before an engine is started the dist must be pulled and use a electric drill and run it up to pressure. This fills the filter and oil galleries. After 45 min of running change the oil and filter and then again at about 100 mi. , then every 3000 mi.
Lucas Heavy-Duty oil stabilizer makes a good assembly lube for mains and rods. Clevite has what is called Camgaurd or Bearing Gaurd which is available through Napa. It is red in color and very sticky.
best I have ever seen or used is clevite camguard/assembly lube stays on the parts very well can be left in a engine that will be sitting for a long while before starting without having to redue it, and have seen several proffesional shops recommend, and use it for engines that they built.
btw it is available at napa, and alot better than lucas, or moly grease as both of them will run out of the bearings in a very short time of the engine sitting.
I've had good luck using just oil.I always prelube before start up and have never had any problems.I used STP a lot years ago and had good luck with it.
I mix a pint of 10W30 with a tube of moly assembly lube (it's slow mixing) then mix this with a pint of STP. This special mix was devised because I couldn't make up my mind on what to use. I've used it on three engines so far with success. On cam I use the supplied lube.
