Battery Problem

I have a 1996 Ford F-250 PSD

A couple days ago I noticed a noice that started. It was a "wooshing" sound and it only happened when I was giving it very little throttle. As I am accelerating I cant hear the sound but once I level off and maintain a constant speed I can hear the sound. It happens in all gears I think but the main ones are 4th and Overdrive.

I was conserned about the sound and I was going to come on this forum and post the problem but yesterday I was going on the freeway traveling about 65-70 mph when all of the sudden it stalled and started back up again. It was fast enough for me to look down, notice all the gauges turn off, then start back up again. All the lights on the dash turned on and then turned back off except for 1 light, the battery.

Right now the truck runs and everything but the battery light is on and the battery level is exremely low. I was hoping someones had this problem in the past and can tell me whats wrong or what im doing wrong that could have caused this to happen. Thanks in advance for all feedback!

My truck finally died today. The batteries are totally dead. The alternator isnt charging the batteries, is there anything else besides the alternator that could be the problem? I would really like to know if that is the only thing that is the problem before I go take it to the shop. Thanks

You say that your alternator isn't charging, how do you know this. Did you have your system tested. If so then it is most likely the alternator. If you haven't had the system checked take it in and have it checked out. If one of the batteries is bad it may not be taking a charge. If that is the case then change the batteries and your problem should be solved.

It could be as simple as the brushes in your alternator are done. That's the cheapest possibilty. From there it just gets worse... voltage regulator or even the alternator itself. I'd assume it's the brushes. Good luck!

As for the whoosh sounds, that's your EBPV.. read the FAQ or do a search and it'll answer your questions about that.

I stopped by a local shop yesterday and he tested the alternator and he told me that it wasnt charging the batteries. He told me that I probably needed the alternator to be relpaced and also since my batteriest are from 2001, they should probably be replaced also.

How would you know if its the brushes in the alternator and if it is, how would you fix it without replacing the alternator itself?

As for the wooshing sound, it wasnt until the day when I stalled on the freeway that the wooshing sound started when I drive at a constant speed. When the engine is cold it makes the noice like it's suppose to do but even when its warm you can hear it while traveling at a constant speed, like 50 mph on a highway. The sound isnt as loud as the EBPV, the noise is quieter but with the same tone. Also, the noise wont go away unless I accelerate, even at high speeds.

I haven't had to work on the alternator on my 02 yet, so I can't say for sure how they work. From past experiences, the brushes are an easily replaceable item. Four screws on the rear of the alternator and out they came. They were underneath the voltage regulator. You were able to do it while the alternator was still installed, but much easier if you took it out (two bolts). But like I said, that was the past. OR... any dealer can print you out a parts schematic of it. It'll show how it's assembled. Call them up and ask. I have them fax the printouts to my work. Just a thought.

As for the woosh.... I'm at a loss
