"shakin'"

Hey everybody!
SD owner since Oct. 04. Since the test drive my truck has been shaking. Just a little at first. Was told to "break in" the tires for 500 miles and bring it back if it persists. It's been back three times since and still shaking. They put the wheels on some machine to do what they call a "Road Pressure Test". First found two bad tires and rims on the right side. Wait three weeks to get replacements. New tires so out of balance shakes real bad. (was told 2 ounces). Still shakin. Getting tired of the back and forth and the run around. Tires are Pirelli scorpion STR. The rims look like a cheap stock steel rim with a shiney chrome cover.
Any body else have this problem with Pirelli's? Would appreciate ANY feedback. I'm allready looking into BBB and TN's Lemon Laws.
Thanks Whitt.

Mee too

I have been cruising around the site here looking for the same answer - I think. I have an '03 6.0 CC LB (Canadian market truck - if it matters) with the Pirelli tires too. My shaking started probably 1000 miles ago - at about 40k give or take. I took it to the dealer for diagnosis and after having it for two days two times they couldn't find anything other than the driveline shudder that has a TSB. I know that needs done but will probably do it myself.

Back to the shudder - here is my experience. It started off only showing up around 72 mph and it didn't matter if I was on the gas or coasting, up hill, down hill, OD or 4th gear. Then it started to show around 50-55. Now it is pretty much constant from 45 up to 75. I have not gone over 75 to see if it is still there. When I had it at the dealership, I could not replicate the shaking on a test drive with the Svc. Mgr. Go figure. Now I can't get away from it. I don't want to take it back to the same dealer because I think I really got screwed around. There is another dealer in town that I will visit. It is farther away but I hope I get better service there.

The shaking I feel is a really low rumble almost like driving over rumble strips but not quite so sharp. I can feel it in the seat and hear the low rumble as well. The steering wheel doesn't shake - in fact, nothing else really shakes - dash, armrest (I think), pedals. I just feel it in the seat of the pants. The shake doesn't seem to change it speed (or frequency). I know it has to be something rotational but can't figure out what would rotate at what seems to be a constant speed. Wouldn't the shake change speeds with my speed if it were the tires or the driveshaft? I suppose I could take the spare out and put it on all four courners alternately to see if I can find one of the tires to be bad. I can't see replacing all the tires on a hunch. If I had the jack, I prolly would but the tires still have some life in them. I suppose I will nose around the rig this afternoon when the rug rats are napping to see what I can find. Hope I don't get snowed on too bad.

Does this sound like what you are experiencing, Whitt??

Oh, and my wheels are the Lariat aluminum wheels with the sort of 5 spoke or 5 hole look. I know I have not hit any curbs or pot holes to knock a wheel out of round. HELP!

Thanks

Big

Have you guys looked at your tires. I have seen a problem with tires wearing real funny on tow different 4wD SD's. One belongs to the company I work for and th other was one that I test drove when I was shopping for mine. Difficlut for me to describe but if you weere to run your hadns over the tread, it was not smooth. This bizzare tire wear caused both truck to ride funny. The dealer with the truck I test drove had moved the bad tires to the rear in hopes that someone would not notice it.

The garage that worked on my truck did the same thing to try to eliminate the tires a source of noise. (rotate the tires) The previous owner had apparently never rotated the tires in the 18k that he owned the truck because the rears were wore twice as much as the fronts. After I had rotated the fronts to the rear, I left them to try to even out the wear. Well after a while the outside shoulder of the front tires was wearing quite a bit more than the rest of the tire. (That may be part of the problem with my shudder.) The wear is smooth and only on the outer 1/4" of the tire. I have seen the wear that texan2004 is talking about. It appears as if the blocks are wearing on every other one and the rear of the block looks as if it is tapered up to meet the road. Kinda tough to describe but I think it is what I am thinking of. That may be a ball joint problem. Heck, my wear may be a ball joint problem too. 6.0PSD kid did an oasis on my truck that revealed that a lot of the front end of my truck was replaced (under warranty by the first owner).[Thanks 6.0PSD "kid" - I don't me to sound condescending;>) ]

You did a fine job of describing the bizarre tire wear that I saw on those two trucks.
