Hello, I'm looking for information from anyone who knows where I can purchase an intake for a 1986 ford f-150, 4.9, 300 cid inline six motor that will allow me to bolt on either a 2 or 4 barrel carb. Currently I have the carter yf single barrel and hate it. You can't find a good rebuilt and they don't sell them new. Or I am unaware as to where? Please help. dek
Two on one thread......Welcome to Ford Truck Enthusiasts! If you have a minute check out the Guidelines, it will help you to navigate through and understand FTE. Stick around someone will be by shortly to answer your question.
We are pleased you have chosen the best source for Fords!
clifford performance is specifically I-6 performance...you can check with them, but i've heard some stuff about problems with the intakes matching up...this could be just hear-say...i haven't heard anything bad about the offenhauser intakes, tho, on the flip-side...myself, when it's time, i'll go with a DP offy intake, and run a smaller holley 4bbl carb....also will run exhaust manifolds off of an EFI engine, as they will allow for better exhaust gas escape from the head, versus what the stock log-style exhaust manifold allows from earlier carb'd engines...will also do some port/polish work on the head, a 3 angle valve job, mill the head to true it up, zero-deck the block to true it, and to bump up my compression, run aftermarket pistons (i read somewhere that pistons for an '82 or earlier engine will work for another compression bump...), a bigger cam for better performance, steel timing gears instead of the stock steel/fibre gear set that ford thought was a good idea (BAD IDEA!!!! BAD IDEA!!!!), dual exhaust through i don't know what kind of muffler system, and swapping from the peezachit TFI IV ignition system over to Duraspark II ignition...
Offenhouser is the only current place producing the 4V intake manifolds. Edelbrock had made 2V intakes for the 300 in the past but no big demand on them in recent years haulted production.
My friend had gotten an adaptor last week from a speed shop that adapted a Holley/Motorcraft 2bbl to the 1bbl manifold. It required some extra effort in widening the stud holes to make it fit correctly but it works fine. We used a motorcraft 2bbl on it, power gain was not impressive but we did find a small vacuum leak on an intake runner so when thats fixed it should be better. It did run better and a bit stronger. It was well worth it considering all the crap one had to do to adjust the choke and fast idle on a 1bbl compared to the ease of a 2bbl carb.
I have the offenhauser I bought for less than 100 off of Ebay. I put a 600cfm holley on top and it ran great for about 2 weeks, the problem? It had close to 300,000 miles on her, the outcome? it blew the crap out of the rings LOL. I still drive it even tho its on someone elses last leg (lobed cam, bad lifters, front and rear oil seals gone, uses more oil than gas) It has soo much blow by it blows the dipstick out and throughs oil all over the place, and with that big of a carb it shoots flames out the tailpipe since the compression is shot and not that good of spark anymore LOL. Ive been driving it like this for the last 6 months. Plan on doing a 4x4 chassis swap with rebuilt 302. I would be sure to do a compression test on her before going with a 2v or 4v intake, also watch what size you put on her. Other than all the problems she has right now she still gets up runs like a raped ape. Hope you have better luck than I did and take better precautions than I, good luck and I hope I helped in some way.
