I have a 2001 F350 V-10. Over the past month or so I have been hearing a gear whine sound coming from somewhere on my truck. It only happens once I get over 20MPH, I will hear a "click" then it starts whining. It continues to whine till I come to a complete stop then starts again once I am past 20 or so. It doesn't happen all the time but is getting more frequent. The noise does not change with speed, turning sharp to once side or another, accelerating or decelerating it is a consistent noise. It is hard to hear at high speeds since I am running 37's and they are pretty noisy. I have gone through the engine, transmission, transfer case and the axles and I can not figure out where the noise is coming from. Have any of you ever had this go on or might know what it is? Any help is greatly appreciated!!
If it picks up erratic speed readings from axles/wheels, can cause ABS system to try to equalize by cycling brakes through the abs motor drive. Just something to check as to speed starting up.
Hard to say but the starting mph and no change in noise with speed or turning is hard to diag from 1000k. May need second person to help listen where the click comes from. Darrell
It is very difficult to troubleshoot and I have had other people listen and they say they hear it but are not much help with trying to figure out where it is coming from. This one is really boggling my mind trying to figure out.
I really don't think it is from the tranny or transfer case. The fluid is clear(red) and at the proper levels but it might be. I guess the only way to know for sure is to take them out and take them apart.
That's a lot of work and you may not see anything. there is a tool that has headphones and 4 sensors you can attach to different places and track down noises. Ford dealer i used to work for doing tranny's had them and they helped greatly trying to find noises without teardown. Darrell
Update on problem. I have replaced upper and lower ball joints, Inner and outer front axle seals and replaced both front hub assembly's along with servicing the brake system. The noise is still there. It does not make the noise when it has been sitting for awhile. Only after diving it and getting everything really warmed up is when the noise starts. I hate to keep replacing parts that might not need to be replaced but I need to get this resolved the noise is very loud.
In your first post, you say that the whine starts above 20 mph, doesn't vary with speed, and stops when you're back under 20 mph.
The next time it happens, stop somewhere and put it in park and rev it to above whatever 20 mph on the rpms would be. If you hear the whine, then that should eliminate the mechanical moving parts like yhe axles, u joints, drive shaft, etc. if you hear it in park, obviously it's coming from an engine component/ maybe a harmonic noise from a belt or fan or something.
