I have a timing light in my garage, but how do I know when it's timed right? Whats the sequence or what? I think I'm going to go buy a Haynes manual tomorow.
The ignition timing is set in degrees before top dead center. On the balancer on the crankshaft there will be little lines, some are number in the degrees. You will also see a pointer on one side, this is were you shine the timing light. Connect the timing light, power to the battery and the inductive pickup to #1 cylinder, passengers front one, make sure all wires are clear. Pull the spout connector, a little plug at the end of a wiring harness coming from the distributor, normally laying on the passengers valve cover. Start the engine up, warm it up, make sure idle speed is within specification. Now you shine the light and read the degrees BTDC. To adjust you loosen the hold-down bolt on the distributor ( engine off ) and turn the distributor while checking the timing. When it's to the specification turn engine off, tight bolt, recheck timing, plug spout in.
