could I just drop a 302 crank in the 289 block?

I have never tried it so can't answer from personal experience but have read somewhere that you can't put the 302 crank in the 289 block, but I don't know why for sure.

Certain 289 blocks weren't machined with enough clearance for the 302 crank. Don't remember if it applied to all 289's or not. The windsor will drop right in where the 289 sits. A mostly stock 351W will put out close to the hp you want. With a little work on the heads and a cam you can see 300HP fairly easy. I would stick with the W since you already are set up for 289. Parts are much more available and cheap, and you get the good oiling system and availability of factory FI if you ever wanted to make it so.

Good luck, and don't worry about overpowering that Scout 800. I know a guy that put a 392 INTL in his and loved it.
