* 4WD AUTO can be used full time and provides "as needed" 4-wheel drive. When driving on dry, non-slick surfaces in the 4WD AUTO mode the majority of the vehicle's power is delivered to the rear wheels. When the system senses the need for increased traction, as indicated by wheel slippage that may occur wehn driving in snow or sand, it will automatically provide 4-wheel drive.

The booklet referes to this as Contro-Trac 4Wheel Drive
All that said, I leave mine in 2WD on dry pavement. I do use the 4WD AUTO when driving in the rain and on wet pavement. It makes a big difference in vehicle stability and control whe driving on wet/slick surfaces. Hope this helps.
