Have 83 350 Diesel the shifter broke and was wondering how to get it off. Took the boot off but didn't see any bolts pins or anthing that could be holing it in.
My 85 just broke last week. In the 85 it is a little cap that you
push in and twist counterclockwise. Ford wanted $160 for a replacement, I have the NP*** transmission. I had to get a magnet
to fish out the end of the shifter and I had a local weld shop
weld the stick back together. It's been running for a week now.
Hello, I know this is late, but just in case...I think the Borg/warner trans has the screw-off cap around the bottom of the shifter. The NP trans has the cap you push down & turn 1/4 turn to unlock. This is sometimes easier said than done. What I do is take a pair of vise grips, and push down on the cap, with the cap pressed down with the nose of the pliers I clamp the vise grips to the shifter, this holds the cap down against the "tough" spring. You can then easily turn the cap with a lager set of pliers to get it off. "I've been there Brother" so Good luck!!
*Note: I thought my trans had gone, when really all that happened was the shift rail in the cover broke. Now I take the covers off before pulling the transmission haha!
Have a good one buddy!
