Hey, I live just a little ways from Mojave and the post-SpaceShipOne Mojave Spaceport!
I love the desert area of CA, I have lived in S. F. as well, and spent years in the bay area in general. I am from Oklahoma originally, and so have an almost ingrained fondness for small towns and rural areas. I go home to OK frequently, but I plan to move back to NM within a year or two. I used to love CA, and had at one time thought to live here for the rest of my life, but now...it just isn't going to happen.
Hey Emul8r, I used to live off of Inyo St. & M St. in Mojave. A short walk to the Mojave Airport. I used to work at a glider repair facility-Fred Jiran Sailplane Repair. We did some work for Burt Rutan. This was in 1973. I missed the place. It was a big change from the city to Mojave and back . I understand your destain for California . I'm getting to the point where it's just a place to live, but not live, if you know what I mean . I'll probably stay here, but not certain. If you only knew the politics here in S.F. Our board of supervisors rival that of Berkeley's. A laughing joke . Yea, maybe I will move after all . LOL.
Out of curiosity, what district in S.F. did you live in?

The only reason I am in a city now is for school, and it is a pain. I hate having to park a block away from my house some nights and not even having room to do and oil change. I have to do it right there on the street.
I wouldn't say city, but I'd like to be close to one. Now I'm 40 miles from STL. I can be there in 40 minutes, but I out here quiet in the country about 8 miles out of my hometown of about 10,000.
If I were to move, I would probably would like to stay about the same vicinity to a STL sized city, and it would problably be somewhere in the south east, possibly the Atlanta area or maybe even farther east.
Hey Emul8r, you were close to Mission High School.
<!I have a some friends that are strait that live in the castro The city does have an unfair stigma of being a gay city, just like Sydney, Australia. I my self being strait, gays don't bother me. To each his own!>
I live in the Middle Richmond District, across the street from the Sea Cliff. Just about 4-5 blocks from Robin Williams' house . As you know, property values here are ridiculous . Way over priced.
I don't suppose you heard of Anton Levay, the devil worshipper with the black house? He had that pet lion, Togar. Small world, huh?
US News & World Report and Money magazine both post the 10 or so best cities in the US to live in. They state the criteria used in their selection. If I remember right, these lists appear in the magazines in the earlier part of the year; keep your eyes open for them.
Bottom line is, and this will sound corny, but home is where the heart is . Man, that WAS tough to say . Just as long as there is warm weather, cold beer, hot chicks, vehicles to drive, great sounding loud stereos and big tv's, I'll be there .
