I have a 96 Ford Explorer XLT. It has about 120,000 miles. I have never had any problems with it starting until now. Each morning when I go to turn the key, the engine cranks but will not start unless I pump the gas pedal. The engine will start but I cannot let off of the gas pedal until the engine is warm. If I do the engine will die. I have a fuel injected engine so I should never have to pump the gas pedal.
Also, if the engine cranks and starts without my help, the RPM is at about 1. If have to help it and let the engine warm up then it is about .5.
I have been to the garage about half a dozen times trying to fix this problem. And each time they think they have it fixed...it runs for a few days then the problem starts all over again.

I am having this same problem. have you got an answer to the cause? i'm assuming it's the fuel pump. please advice if you have solved this problem.
thank you.
I had the same problem and I found that the sensor attached to the timing flywheel was dirty. I simply disconnected and reconnected and haven't had a problem since.
