FIRE in F150s . . .

Hey all you F250+ and Ex owners out there. Is it possible that our trucks could have this Fire problem? Does any one know where this switch is they are talking about? If someone can point me to the switch I'll get pictures and instructions to unhook it QUICKLY!! The Recal I'm talking about is written up here http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6876176/

Mike,
I don't know but I have been wondering the same thing, it don't seem to me like Ford would use a "different switch", on a F250-350 than it did on a F150. But you never know...... I guess we will all find out soon.

I think the problem is that the switch is powered all the time, even when the truck is shut off. I also think that is why they don't have a fix yet. It may not be the switch, but the way it is wired.

The F250 may have a different wiring scheme.

Just a thought.

From what I understand because this is a cruse control switch the same switch and problems may exist on many different models of Ford/lincoln/merc cars and trucks it has just shown its ugly head on the F150s first. If I also understand this correctly Ford is currently unhooking this switch leaving the truck driveable but with no cruse. I think I would rather be safe and unhook mine and let Ford figure it out. I just would like to know the location of this cruse control switch so I can investigate my self.

My 04 f 350 crew V10 seems to have the same Cruise Control brake pressure deactivation switch. It's right at the front side of the brake master cylinder. My wiring manual shows it to be powered only in "run" by a 2 amp fuse. The info I can find on the f150 problems said the circuit was hot all the time and powered by a 20 amp fuse. I did see a post on another site with pictures of an 03 6.0 f250 that burned supposedly due to a fire from the switch. I do not know if the problem was mitigated in 04 by a circuit change? I don't have a F150 wiring diagram to verify how they are built.

I just got off the phone with Ford Consumer Services. They checked my vin for my 1999 F250 Regular Cab Super Duty and found that NO recall has been issued. I guess this is only affecting F150 owners. Now I can rest easy...haha..

Not sure we can rest easy yet. Current recall is the one the government has forced Ford to do. There are millions of other vehicles with the same switch that have not been recalled yet according to the news report on tv.

The switch is in front of the brake fluid bottle. one of the wires is hot all the time. not good. F150 only. find that wire and cut it. fold it over and tape it to the bundle. find a wire that's hot only with the truck running, and splice it to the cut wire on the switch. now it will work like our F250/350's

I spoke with Ford today don't think many can breathe easy yet. It doesn't appear to be just the F-150's. I was totally unaware of the fires until listening to the news yesterday.

I filed a complaint on a F-250 Super Cab diesel. The same thing happened, it was parked in the garage fire burnt my business close to the ground. There was nothing left of the F-250, except the shell. Fire was so severe it also burnt one sitting outside.Quite a ways from the burning building.

Ford's Legal Dept called & stated they may be contacting me next month about the recall. A little late for that if you ask me. We replaced many things destroyed. Have also rebuilt the shop but no vehicle will ever enter the garage again. Its to unsafe.

May sound stupid, but are the chances to catch fire only when using cruise?

Sounds like it happens after truck is parked. Switch is powered still after shutdown. As soak heat from engine builds temperature under hood it gets hot enough to combust.

This is obviously a serious problem and one Ford should remedy. I think its important to look at the numbers though. The current issued recall covers all 2000 F-150s, Expeditions, and Navigators, and the 2001 F-150 screw. Out of those vehicles, I would safely say that over 1.5 million were produced. According to ABC World News Tonight, only 64 fires have been reported. That's less than 1%!!! It might be a good idea to pull the fuse to the cruise unit, but I wouldn't get too worked up about anything just yet. Let Uncle Sam do his investigation and find out what's wrong.

chances are that they have used the switch for many different things but on the f 150s they wired it up different, but as brianj77 said it is a realitivly small percentage of the f150s. And probably has a simple fix, i wouldnt get overly excited.
