Hi, I am new to FTE. I am changing the clutch in a 94 Ranger one of the crossmember bolts is stuck. I got the nut off and I am able to turn the bolt the bolt 360 degrees. I threaded the nut back on and have hit it with a persuader. However, I cannot get the bolt to budge. Any suggestions? I was considering heating it up but I do not want to burn the rubber bushing. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi BoB i have 89 ranger I also had to remove trans crossmember the bolt was so rusted to the inside of the bushing i had to cut both sides of the bolt to get it apart .even on the bench i could not remove the remainder of the bolt.i had to rebuild that side of the crossmember. hope that helps
Before you go cutting anything, I would try a quick and easy fix:
Soak the heck out of it with lube or something like pb blaster. Then put a jack under that side of the crossmember. Barely jack it up enough just to get some tension off the bolt. Then give it that good whack again and tell me it didn't move.
I would only consider cutting if all else fails, but you said it will turn in the mount. This makes me think it just needs the proper attitude adjustment given to it.
Hi, I have hit many times with my 5# sledge. I have even tried turning it while my neighbor rapped it with the sledge. Have also taken a pair of channellocks and moved the rubber to loosen up whatever. I will try again tommorow. I have also soaked with penetrating oil. I might try pressing with a small arbor press. I'll let you all know what happens. Thanks for your sugestions.
Hi again bob I think you will find that the bolt has welded itself (rusted)to the sleave where the bolt goes in you cant see this sleave its inside the tube part (round part of the crossmember)I could see mine because it was rusted out . this sleave and rubber bushing are held together with big washers on each side the sleave goes thru these washers then they are hammerd over..I soaked the bolt on the bench for several days would not budge
Hi all, I gave up on getting the bolt out. Was able to get tranny out and back in while leaving one side of the crossmember on the truck, (driver's side). As it turned out there was an advantage to this, the crossmember actually helped in getting the trans. back in. Thanks for all the advice from all of you I appreciate it
