I Have A 99' Expy With The 4.6, I Installed A Fram Air Hog Filter And Have Felt A Little More Power. I Was Just Wondering If Anybody Has Installed Headers And Exhaust Or Anything Else With Any Success?
I have cut the air filter housing allowing more air to get to the filter. I removed about half of the housing. This can be accomplished with a Dremel tool or tin snips. Once finished it resembles the aftermarket look without the price but with the performance. I also have the Superchips program installed. I also have a flowmaster catback exhaust installed. Just those modifications, the truck has much more power and get much better gas mileage. Superchips program calls for premium fuel but I have found that it performs as well on mid grade. It does ok on regular gas but the pinging noise appears under hard acceleration. So I stick with mid grade or premium fuel.
Intake, exhaust & Superchip... those are what we had on our '97 w/4.6L.
Intake was a home-made jobber like Freak4Ford's. Exhaust was a 'custom' true dual setup that was installed by a local shop. Wife wouldn't drive the Expy without the Superchip installed.
Also, if you have 3.55 gears, some 4.10s will really bring the Expy to life!
There is an axle code on the sticker located on the driver's door jamb. Use one of the many decoders to determine gear ratio & if limited-slip.
Or... you can crawl under and read the metal tag bolted to the differential cover. It'll say something like "3 55", "3L55", "3 73", or "3L73" depending on your gear ratio and whether you have factory limited-slip or not.
Not to hi-jack your thread, but thanks to NoMo for the info on where to find the gear ratio. I just went and looked at my diff cover and, fortunately, I have the 3.73 (no LSD).
I have an '03 w/ the 4.6l and have, as we all now know, 3.73 gears, K&N Series 77 cold-air intake, and a Magnaflow cat-back, and I feel like it makes decent power. I will be ordering the SCT Xcal2 this Friday (payday, woohoo!!!). That should wake it up a lot more. Then just to get rid of these heavy-a$$ 20" Momo's and it should be pretty decent, considering it's a Mustang engine in a full-sized truck. I think the last-gen Expy's are a lot lighter than the current-gen, correct? With those few mods you should feel a pretty big overall improvement in power. Good luck!
