Hi Guys and Gals,
I have a few questions for ya'll.
1. Does anyone know what the limits/replacement times are for the struts on a 2000 2WD Exp with the 5.4L, it already has 125000 miles on it. 2. What is the recommended replacement age or mileage for the timing belt on the same vehicle?
3. Does anyone have any opinions on motor oil? Synthetic, synthetic blend, or old faithful. Brands, too!? Do you switch oils as mileage increases or stick with what got you where you are?
I think that'a about it. I look forward to reading your responses. Thanks for your time. Ford5.4L
Struts or for that fact shocks should be replaced as needed. Check tires for cupping, check lower part of shock/strut for oil leakage. If your ride feels like a teater totter, its time. Most any shop will do this for free.
Timing belt: Check for cracks, rib chips, lack of tension.
Oil: I swear by synthetic, Mobil 1 5-30
My credentials: 97 Expy, 5.4L, 2x4 towing package, 351,236 miles, Tranny just done at 342k, replaced one belt, one set of shocks replaced rear, two sets front, just put on my 4th set of tires at 325k (I recommend Michelin/Uniroyal, dump the Goodyears). I was flushing the motor at 100k incriments, but since its getting older, I am doing 50k now. I go 10k between changes, filter every 5k. Had rear axle seals done at 320k. Do my brakes around 80-100k (lots of hwy driving). Replaced one radiator and one alternator (my fault on the alternator, used a power inverter).
Typically, a timing belt is used to drive the engine's cam(s), and is not visible without some engine disassembly. If you are referring to the serpentine drive belt that powers the power steering pump, water pump and alternator, then I concur with High Horse. BTW, the Triton engine series uses timing chains, which are much more durable than a timing belt, which often has to be replaced at 60,000 mile intervals on those engines so equipped.
Thanks PaulC, I wasn't paying attention for the belt part, I have so much going on I instinctively thought of the serpentine belt. I hope I didn't mess you up Ford5.4L, brains has been pushed to the limit lately.
So I stand corrected, no timing chain on my truck yet, but one serpentine belt...there, that's better. Brains still need work though, maybe an oil change....lol
