I have a 1997 f-250 heavy duty ext cab w/ 8' box , 7.3 litre powerstroke diesel, The transmission all of the sudden will not go into overdrive, it feels like it trys, but acts like it's stuck between 2 gears, and slows the truck down like the brakes are on. The truck works wonderful as long as I click the OD off on the gear shift handle, but if driven for a little while , it smells like hot oil. I took it to a Ford Dealer and they put it on their computer and all the could tell me was that the sensors are fine and that they would have to pull the tranny out at a cost of $500.00, to look at it, any suggestions anyone, please help, I need my truck back Thanks for any help you can give.

Weclome!
The hot oil smell is probably bad! Means you're getting your tranny too hot. I wouldn't bother with the dealer, they just want your money. Go to a local tranny shop that you know is good and talk to them. I don't know what the problem would be, but I'm sure they could find out and do it for a reasonable price.
