Tinnerman nuts are a thin sheet of spring steel with a stud sized hole in the middle. There are two little tabs protruding into the hole.
The tinnerman nut is pressed over the stud, and the two tabs catch onto the stud threads, keeping it in place.
They were used at the factory to hold the drums onto the vehicle while it moved down the assembly line, and are discarded at the first brake change.
It is highly unlikely you will find them still on trucks this old!
