At peak horsepower and torque you may find an increase. Your driving habits do not normally see this range for mileage or performance towing. Donaldson designed the air filter for the stock intake.
If the gain at peak is worth the price and dirt that enters the system through an after market intake, the choice is yours to make.
I'm with Maximum 4x4. Look at this performance chart from K&N. My driving at 70 MPH is 2000 rpm. The performance gain is negligable. What about filtration? Can't beat the stock Donaldson for both filtration and performance.
If gains are negligable and you increase the possibility of dirt intake, why do it? Man, I am going to have to send back the AFE stage 2 that is being delivered as we speak!!
I did not realize that the "high performance" filters did such a shoddy job. There are other things I can spend 300 bucks on. Maybe air-ride suspension?
Maybe we are creatures of habit and have to change something. The intake is your choice to keep or change. The after market filter does not do a shoddy job, the stock filter did not leave room for improvement.

I think the stock filter is darn good. However, there has to be a way to let air and not birds, big bugs, water and snow get into the intake. The Zoodad mod is good but allows too much FOD material in. Still noodling how to do it.
when i put my airaid on my truck , i noticed a noise coming out of the air box , this noise i did not notice when i had my stock filter on. does anyone else had this problem?
There are better experts on this board, but if you actually chip your truck, or add propane/water, then you may NEED to flow more air. I think the stock filter flows more than enough air for normal use. By the same token, trying to run a stock filter, after you have other more serious modifications, such as a programmer or propane injection might be counter-productive.
I run a programmer with 100HP and stock intake. The filter would be a plus if racing is the application but 99.9% of the time your not seeing the need for more air.
I am leaving this open to the end user. If you want to run an after market filter that is your choice to do so. I have worked with K&N filters for many years on naturally asperated engines. I do have a concern on the oil used in a filter ending up in the inter-cooler. I have seen the end result of a long term use of a K&N on a Cummins turbo, the inter-cooler was coated with oil. I do not know the owner of the truck and he might have abused or used a non qualified oil. Jury is out on this subject, if I see another case of oil in the intercooler I would be questioning the practice of a filter using oil and what performance loss due to the inter-cooler not being able to disapate heat.
Just my thought on the subject, no flaming intended....just an observation from the upper deck.
If oil in the intercooler is bad, then I may have trouble. I see a little oil dripping off the tubes going to the intercooler and basically everything that goes too and from the turbo.

Your crankcase ventilation opens into the intake between the filter and turbo. So you will get some oil getting compressed out. What is your oil level like. It should not show much over the "MIN" line on the dipstick.
