Since I bought my 2001 SuperCrew (5.4L) about 4 months ago, from time to time when I check the oil, there shows to be none! I can change the oil, drive about 500 miles and check it, and it doesn't even register on the dipstick. There are absolutely no leaks or smoke of any kind. It's almost as if the dipstick isn't long enough, but it is the same as my brother in laws on the exact same truck. Could it be loosing oil internally, and if so, where is it going? Often I check after driving, particularly while filling up, could it be that ALL of the oil is still inside the block and not enough left in the pan to check until it sits awhile? I'm stumped!

Eh, I think you're making it out to be more complex than it is. No matter how you drive it, if theres enough oil in there, there should ALWAYS be some in the pan. It creates a pretty disastrous situation if ALL of your oil is up in the engine. Maybe somebody lost, broke, bent or otherwise destroyed the original dispstick, and replaced it with one thats not long enough. Try changing your oil, drive 500 miles, then take out the oil plug. Do 6 quarts come out? If not, you have a serious oil leak somewhere, but if there's no smoke, I couldn't tell ya where. If you had a problem like that, losing oil that fast, your engine woulda been dead and gone a long time ago, so don't worry about that. I guess the dipstick just isn't long enough.
Try to truble shoot it,
you said a budy has the same engine as you, well, grab his dipstick shove it in.. if it reads full, then your dipsticks wrong, if it still shows no oil, then you got a problem.
Befor you drive these 500 miles, is your oil full? (stupid question, but not indicated in original question)..
it should be 6q to the bottom of the dipstick, just under 7q to the max line.
