I recently bought a 91 f 150 ext 4x4 and it doesnt have a front gas tank or straps. I found i have 2 options a 17 and a 19gal tank. how do u tell what tank will work. And where is a good place to get straps.
thanks
doug
Yes, its17 for a short bed and 19 for a long bed. Now, since yours didn't come with one you better crawl underneath it. My 93 longbed came with a shortbed tank. You can see in the frame where the straps hook in. Since mine came with a short bed tank, there was an extra crossmember that bolted on both sides of the truck. So if you only see two places to hook the straps, you need the 19 gallon tank. I bought the longbed tank before taking mine out.I tried to put it in and wouldn't fit until that crossmember was taken out.
Maybe they corrected it by 1991, but I've mostly heard only bad things about the dual tanks.I just had my leaky & quite worthless rear tank removed.Buddy of mine had to replace all 3 of his fuel pumps(one is on the frame). Either way, good luck, hope it works out ok.
Ok im confused. What crossmember. And how do i know if it was an odd ball and came with a longbed tank. Where do u measure a truck bed to get the proper length. I measured mine and I got 7ft for the bed length. As for a 17gal tank, jeffs bronco grave yard doesnt even show having it. They are showing 16 and 19. Can u possibly take the VIN or something and contact a ford dealer and find out what it came with in the first place.
Thanks
Doug
Is your truck a longbed or short.? If you see a
n L shaped crossmember bolted to the frame, you'll know. I didn't find out until I tried putting the bigger tank in.
If it's 8 feet, it's a shortbed. You need the smaller tank. There's no way a longbed tank will fit under a shortbed, so don't even worry about it. And if the only thing that's missing is the tank, everything else should still be there. You might have to do some troubleshooting, though.
There are only two fuel pumps. Starting in 1990, there was one high pressure pump in each tank. The dual tank system works FINE. Just because a guy somewhere had to pull his tank out because it was leaking doesn't mean it's a bad system. I had no problems with my dual tank setup on my 1990. (well, I did replace one pump, but other than that...)
