I put a rebuilt carb with auto. choke on my 78 351M 4x4. I'm trying to figure out how to hook up the choke housing to the engine so it will open and close. I've heard a couple different stories on how they are supposed to be installed. I've been told they work off temperature from the block, intake, and exhaust manifolds. Which (if any) of these are true. If it's the exhaust, my truck has headers, so what option does that leave me? Where can I get some detailed information (with pictures if possible) for this install?
Thanks everyone.
I don't know as much about it as I should, but I had that automatic choke on my old motor and it never worked worth a darn. It is suppossed to work off the heat/vacuum from the intake manifold, but I never could get mine to run right. I was glad when I got rid of it and got a 4BBL carb with electric choke.
If the choke housing on the side of the carburetor has a flare fitting pointing down (and slightly to the rear), it should be connected to a heat exchanger coil located inside the intake manifold's exhaust crossover.
The following pic shows what the heat exchanger looks like installed on the OEM manifold, and the tube that connects the choke to the heat exchanger.
If the choke thermostat has an electrical spade terminal, it should be connected to a wire from the alternator's stator terminal.
