I was on my way to work and tranny started slipping like it was in neutral. OT OH! I shifted different gears while I was moving - D 2 1. I took it out of OD and it seemed to like 2nd. It would not shift up or down after that. I pulled into a parking space at work. Put it in Park. Tried all gears and nothing happens. Engine speeds up like it is going to go in gear but nothing. I will check the fluid in a few minutes but might have to have wife come pick me up. 01 F150 5.4 4R70W trans. 39k miles. Any clue what's up?
I just checked the fluid, it's full. No leaks. I tried drive and it jumped into gear. It will not go in reverse though. I will push it out of the space and try to run it home. Thanks
I made it home ok. No reverse at all. It will stay in first until 20 then shift to second. Then go to third around 30. If I have it in OD, it will act like it goes to neutral at 50. It is not downshifting if I accelerate hard. Could it be a switch? Fluid is ok and no leaks.
It sounds like an internal mechanical problem
There is nothing electronic that can prevent it from going into reverse.
With all I hear about transmission shops I'd be inclined to have it checked at your dealer if you have a good dealer there. Your dealer has the tools to diagnose it properly and should have trained transmission techs.
Just a hunch, I tried a new transmission range sensor (TRS) but that wasn't it. The dealer said it would be anywhere from $70-$140 for them to diag it. I've never cracked open an auto trans so I'm sure it's over my head. I'll go as far as having the dealer determine it is a bad tranny and then I could buy a rebuilt one and swap it myself. I'll let you know the results. Thanks for your help.
