Question e40d Trans temp

Does anyone know what the normal operating temp for an e40d is? My truck is a 97 f250 hd with a 351w, supercab longbed. I put an autometer trans temp guage in and it reads between 100 degrees Farenhiet and 125 degrees, is this normal? I thought it would of been alittle hotter than that, thanks for any help--dinty01

Anywhere from 60-100 degrees above outside temperature is normal.

When I drive my 94 F250 4x4 supercab long bed 4.10 E4OD without a load my autometer guage in the auxilliary filter housing coming out of the cooler shows well under 150 degrees most of the time. If it is cool it may take an hour or two before I see the temp get past about 130.

If it is summer and in the 90s+, usually I will see 150-160? after warming up. I have seen it spike at 180 during long slow hill climbs.

With an 8,000# trailer it warms up sooner but still in the winter it may take an hour or two before I see near 180. Most of the time in the summer I will see under 200. If I am going 70+ with wind and some hills I will sometimes see 200 to 210 if it is 90+ outside. Once I saw it spike at almost 240 after a long hot drive towing the trailer(220 while driving) and after we backed up our driveway, about 600 feet with a slight uphill(240 when stopped). So in otherwords the tranny was heat soaked and we were going very slow with no real airflow over the coolers in reverse pushing our trailer uphill a bit to see a temp that is too high. Also BTW, I noticed some drips of ATF when I stopped the truck. I normally do not see drips and haven't since.

Just my experience.

Hey guys thanks for the responses, right now in PA its pretty cold out so going by the info posted by casey, 100-115 should be about right as our daily highs have only been about 25-30. The other day I did a whole bunch of errands, driving most of the day, about 7 hours off and on and my temp got up to about 150, a lot of it was sitting in traffic but once i got moving the temp went down alittle. Ill keep an eye on when summer hits, the purpose of getting the guage was to see if my trans was running too hot and if a deper trans pan was necessary for cooling purposes, well see come summer, thanks again--Dinty01
