Exclamation F250 v10 VS. v8

I am looking at buying an 01-03 f250 SD 4x4. I see alot with the 5.4 in them, and alot with the 6.8 v10. I will be using the truck to get to point a and b with mostly city driving, and some highway. In the summer i will pulling a about 8k-10k unilty trailer with a bobcat. Will the 5.4 do it ? What kind of gas mileage does the v10 get to the 5.4?

thanks guys, Josh

There is very little difference in the mileage between the 2. Some actually report better mileage with the V10 because the V8 works pretty hard to move the beast. I doubt that with a 10K# trailer that either would give a lot of grief. Work your best deal.

either will be fine. the 5.4 will handle it so will the v10. you should be able to score a better deal on a v10.

10K trailer? You'll want a V10. For the same fuel economy and $600 difference, why not have the extra power on tap (not to mention making the little 5.4 work so hard to move so much truck.)

as an owner of the 5.4, i agree with tvsjr..... get the V10. i would do the same if i had it to do again.... the 5.4 is a good engine, but i feel it is a little under powered for the sd. especially if down the road you decide you want to get some larger tires......

the v10 might get 1-2 mpg less but the power difference is worth it.

2005 F-250, Lariat, FX4, 6.0L PSD, Crew Cab, Powersteps

I used to have a V10 with 4.30 rear end. I wish I still had it. That truck would outrun any PSD out there. Banks, Bully Dog, Programmer, it didn't matter; the PSDs didn't stand a chance. I get 14 mpg with my 6.0L now. I got 11 mpg with my V10. I miss the instant power of that gas motor. My 6.0 is a pig in comparison.

Certainly respect your experience and opinion, but we don't want to get into yet another gas v. deisel flame war...... The question as posed is 5.4 v. 6.8..... Not to say we don't like your colors!

I have to v-10s one work truck and one with 38.5s on it and I get almost the same milage as my old mans 06 with the v-8. 03 4x4 crew cab with welding rig on back gets 10-11 mpg. I had a co. truck with a v-8 (2wd) and it didnt like the larger bobcats.

I have the V 10 and am very happy with the power. I have 4.30's and 35 inch tires and I get about 10mpg. I wish it was more but... its a big truck and it will haul anything. I haul a 24ft enclosed with lawn equipment, thats around 8-9K Pulls NO problem. Day to Day driving... My bronco is much easier to find a parking space and gets alittle better MPG

I had a 97 4x4 250 with 5.8 with 4.10s and now have a 05 250 4x4 with 4.30s and V10 my daily driver and a very good motor with the tow command system it pulls so much better than my old truck I could not belive the difference. this truck is nice. I pull a tractor and trailer around 9k and it moves it nice. with the price of parts for service and fuel costs it is a big descision on the way to go. I do not pull every day but when I do it is great.

For resale purposes alone, get the V10. Any high-elevation use will demand all the engine you can get. I have the v10/4.30 combo in a crew cab, and cannot fathom getting any less engine. 12ish MPG highway (sane speeds) and 10.8 in town. I live at 7000' elevation and so the 20% power loss due to elevation would cripple a 5.4.

Red face

I have a 2005 4x4 SC, SB, v-10 tq and 410s. I use to have a 99 f-150 5.4 auto and 373s. I pulled the same travel trailer then as now. It weighs 6500lb. The 5.4 was a durable engine but when you start up a grade the power of the v-10 will be what you'll want. If you get the 5.4 opt for 430s for sure, towing. They shouldn't come with anything less in my opinion. My 2005 3valver superduty does great with 410s and I wouldn't want 373s in it. Others say 430s should be what you should have regardless of engine. I will say I much prefer the v-10 over the 5.4 but I haven't driven the 3valve 5.4. The v-10 is wonderfully smooth and quiet. (You won't need more power with the right rear end ratio). Just don't settle for 373s for heavy towing.

I have a 99 350 srw with the 5.4. It pulls a bobcat like it isnt even there, and it will kick side ways around turns. I know for a fact it tops out at 95mph semi-loaded or not. I get between 9-12 mpg on regular unleaded.
