I am tossing around the idea of creating Custom Door panels, because the original door panels are torn to crap.
Has anyone created custom door panels? I was thinking of making some out of 1/8" or 1/4" material(wood, etc.) and covering it with material. If so, I would love to see pictures.
The cost of replacements is a bit pricy, for my budget, so that is why I am looking at alternatives. Any other ideas you have would be great.
yeah ive done it im not quite done though. i went maybe a step fruther than u might want to do. i ended up changing the hole handle linkage to a turn style. but other than that it was easy. i used masonite for the wood if ur looking for a material list. ill try and get some pics up soon
Dennis, I did search both the Appearence and 73-79 forums. I got good results, but not what I was looking for.
Sprocket... thanks for the link...
Good 'Ol... my idea was to use a masonite or similar product as well. AFter looking at the design, I can see why you went to a turn style. If you could get me pics that would be great.
Also, if you get a chance, click the NW Forum link in my signature and come join us over there. We've got people from the tri-state region hanging out and working on trucks. It would be great to see you there.
Ivan, I liked the last one on your link about shaping the board. I wonder if it would hold its shape if it got wet again. I suppose you could seal it with some polyeurathane before covering with fabric.
Attaching the panel to the door. Let's be frank, the stock attachment clips on the plastic pannels suck. You would want a better means of attaching the panel so that it won't rattle, and so you can repeatedly remove the panel for service of the inner-door-workings without breaking/bending the hardware. I HATE interior rattles!
Second, think about what custom stereo installers do to build custom interior pannels; they bond sheets of masonite together to build up the proper thickness, then they route out their design (including arm rests) then they cover it in vinyl or leather or snakeskin or...?
Ivan, why didnt I ever thinkg of Diamond plate... the look would be great. I might have to check out the ebay store and see if that fits into my budget.
Stoner, I have been thinking of ways to get around the arm rest and door handle issue. I thought about a similar process of stacking product to get a curved surface so the door handle flows right or using a fiberglass process.
I want to keep the costs down. I think in the end I might be better off and in it for less money, If I just buy replacement door panels.
Sure would like to see some diamond plate panels if anyone has photos....
It's on my to do list but way down at the bottom. I have the diamond plate aluminum somewhere in my garage but haven't had the time. I was planning to Dynomat the back side of it so there would be no rattles and then I was going to use some stainless sheet metal screws around the perimeter to secure it to the door. I'm still in search of arm rests so when I have time to wander my local junk yard I'll see what I can find.
So you are just cutting flap diamond plates to fit on the door and cutting holes for handles and window cranks? No curves or anything to them? That might look cool. Might be kinda hard to make it look right, but if you got it, I bet it would be really good looking.
