I went to put my new intake gasket on my '68 360 and found that the intake gasket doesn't have a port for the exhaust to match the intake. The package for the gasket lists the gasket for 352, 390 and others (not 360). Is it wrong for my 360? I'm guessing it is, but don't know why - thought some of you gurus out there could explain.
I had the impression that some intakes did not have the exhaust cross over port, not in these trucks but perhaps in some of the cars to which they were fitted? Definitely sounds like the wrong gasket.
My parts guy tells me that the performance gaskets typically don't have the exhaust port. He said that the exhaust crossover is there to help warm the intake (especially useful in cold weather environments). He advised that as long as the gasket covered the exhaust port completely, it would be okay. He suggested that if I wanted the "warming" feature, I could cut a hole in the gasket.
The reason I'm not going with the standard intake gasket set (OEM style) is that I was told that the Aluminum intake isn't stiff enough to seat the hard gasket, therefore requiring the softer high-performance style gasket.
