I dropped off the truck last night to get the TS recall done. I also told them of a few other issues the truck was having. I am keeping my fingers crossed that everything works out ok. Will keep you posted on the service as it gets done. I was a little leary about getting the service done and have not read too many threads where people have already gotten the service. So I thought it would be a good idea for me to post my experience for those who are worried and waiting to get the service done.
Well, I wasn't worried until I read your post. Thanks. Just kidding, mine is going in Thursday. I've been holding off on the Predator til the recall gets done, so now I can't wait...
Truck dropped off last night for following issues:
-TS tranny recall that I called them about. Learned from this site. They said they have done several already and they will need the truck at least one day. I'm guessing more like a week.
-When engine in HOT, it sometimes won't start or cranks a very long time before starting. Must be hot like when towing. The rest of the time it starts fine.
-Engine intermittently sputters, smokes, and gets quiet idle. When it does this the turbo cycles up and down too. It fixes itself upon turning off and on.
-When cold starting, especially at high altitude, occasionally the vehicle will not move for up to a minute. Infrequent occurance, and it must be a cold engine.
-2-3 upshift clunk.
Several of these items are intermittent, so I'm not sure how well they will be able to fix them.
-Truck has under 18k miles.
I was given a Ford Freestar as a complimentary driver until I get the truck back.
I was told they began work on my truck this morning.
I want to take my 05 PSD in and get the TS flash. Ford mechanic said it would probably solve some issues I have. I still have to get the vibration out of the driveline. It hasn't worsened, but it doesn't get better either. I'm waiting on a few more miles. Ford garage has admitted there definitely is a vibration, so it's at least in the system.
I just got my truck back today from the transmission recall. All seems well, I have no problem with the engine warming up. Transmission feels just like it did when I bought it, never had any problems. My dealer opened a work order, which allowed them to order the parts required. I kept the truck for 4 days till the parts came in. Then they had it for 7 working days. They said I didn't have any further metal contamination damage, so mine was caught in time, or was never going to have a problem. They did replace both filters and flush out the lines. I don't really know why it took them so long, but I had a free loaner so it worked out OK.
Called the dealer last evening for an update. I was told that the "diesel guy" finished with my truck. He replaced the EGR valve- again - and reprogrammed the truck. This is the third EGR valve and third reprogram. The last two haven't fixed the problems yet, so I'm still skeptical. The truck is now with the "tranny guy" and the service writer was optimistic that I would get my truck back today. Skeptical there too, but we'll see.
Yeah, first one (original) was definitely a problem. It was so covered in soot that it wouldn't open or close. They replaced that one and reflashed and things were better. Then I got the white smoke/rough idle. Took it in again. This time they replaced the ICP sensor and reflashed. Again things got better, more mileage, less problems. Then the white smoke/rough idle began again, this time intermittent. Now the third egr and reprogram. I don't think the EGR is the problem this time, I think it is just the first thing on their list of things to replace and see how it works. This egr has less than 7,000 on it.
Well, I got the truck back as promised last night. They replaced the reverse planetary gear, the egr valve and reprogrammed the pcm, tcm, and everything else they could reprogram. Truck ran fine on the way home. The trip home produced 20.7 mpg. Everything warmed up like it was supposed to. So far I can't complain. It looks like they did it right the first time, so much for being skeptical.
Recall on 2004 TorqShifts:
Certain trucks built from 3-8-04 through 6-24-04 may experience a failure of the low/reverse planetary assembly. Specifically one or more of the planet gear pinion shafts may walk out of the carrier. If this occurs metallic contamination of the fluid will occur and will cause harsh or slipping shifts and/or harsh or delayed engagements in forward or reverse. Trucks affected by this recall will have the low reverse planetary replaced if no damage has occured, or will have the transmission overhauled and repaired as needed, along with replacement of the transmission cooler, if damage has occured.
Customer Statisfaction Program 04B24.
Took mine in yesterday, got it back this morning. They only did the one kit meaning there was no metal in my fluid or noticeable damage. No problem with warm up so far. However, either they got transmission fluid all over the tranny and didn't clean it up or I have a leak. I cleaned it all up earlier today, so we'll see if it continues to mark its spot. Incidentally, it clearly says "Recall" on my work order in about 4 different places, so I think it is safe to call this a recall as opposed to the customer satisfaction program....
I believe that my dealer said it is a reflash for the TCM only('05) and wouldn't affect the performance of the engine. All I want it to do is cease the shiftdown on every little grade change. As far as the rest of the vehicle, I'm satisfied at this point and hope all continues to be OK.
I'm glad your experience went well. Mine wasn't so great. Tranny works great after snap ring replacement but now I have a transmission leak from the front seal. Back to the dealer on Monday for another tranny removal. I've had this truck for 2 weeks now and the dealer has seen more of it than I have.
