how much trouble and $$$$ is involved in replacing the ignition in a 1992 F150? I found one that has an ignition that just spins and has no altanator or battery, the guy says make offer. need to know what I'm gonna have to spend time and $$ wise.
Exactly what part of the ignition are you refering to?? When you say replace the ignition and found one that just spins w/ no alternator or battery what are you looking at? Are we talking key/lock cylinder, electrical switch on the column, starter or what??
Ok let me be a little more clear. It has no battery, altanator or keys. That is all erulavant to the ignition problem I have the question with. What I have been told buy the guy is. the cylinder/lock can just be spun in circles right now with no key in it. I don't know what it would do if there was a key in it, but the way they talk it does not lock up like a normal key cyclnder would do without a key in it. So they assume it would do the same with a key in it. Follow me?
Battery - $30-40
Alternator - $100-150
Key cylinder and installation by a locksmith - $100-150???
The look on your face when you find out the engine is blown and this guy has been using this truck for parts - Priceless!!!
Just kidding. I'd ask this fella why there's no battery and alternator and why the ignition cylinder is broken. Does it run? Is it stolen? Why did he pull parts off it. Probably someone who doesn't know a lick about taking care of a vehicle. How much does he want for the truck? I have the same truck, an F150 4x4. NADA says it's worth around $3000. Offer the guy $500. The way I see it you've got nothing to loose. If the truck runs and all it needs are the parts put back then I'd give $500 for it. But I'd sure be interested in knowing why the parts are gone.
The key/lock cylinder runs about $30 at Advanced or Autozone and is actually a little cheaper at the dealer. About $28 and change. It is not a big problem to repair in either of the conditions that you describe. With a new key/lock cylinder you get (2) new keys anyway. I would wonder if the chrome collar is what is spinning or the entire cylinder. The key/lock cylinder has a fluted end on it that fits into a gear at the internal end of the key/lock cylinder. The gear marries up to the upper actuator, which in turn marries up to the lower actuator. I know the lower actuator is available, dealer only, because I bought one, about $10. You could probably order the upper if you needed it or may be junk yard trip. Dealer did not stock upper actuator because they rarely replaced them. When you find out more details about this, post back if you like.
The truck was repoed so its a bank guy I had been talking to about the truck. I went and looked at it last night. It IS just the crome collar that is spinning. (I had a 93 that did this and it started fine. I think they are assumming it will not work because they have no keys. Know one knowes why the parts are gone, but its got a nice clean 300 6 in it, and its a pretty darn stright truck, no rust so I'm gonna offer him a little $$$ for it and see how that goes.
