Reading codes

So how exactly do I read the codes on my 97 turbo diesel?

you need an obd2 scan tool or some programmers do it too. and then you you hook it up to dlc on passenger side under glove box. most part stores have them and do it for free. advance auto parts has a very nice one it even prints your codes on a receipt for you to take home. hope this helps.
