I tried timing my 300 4.9L today but I couldn't read the timing guage. I found the notch on the virbration damper no problem, and I could see the timing scale on the block but I couldn't read the numbers. I could see the "tick" marks fine and I could see where the numbers were but I couldn't read them - it had a little surface rust on it.
What should I do? I was thinking maybe I could sand it off with some fine grit sand paper. 220 grit? Or if someone could tell me how far down the timing scale 6 btdc is (eg: 3rd valley down from the top, or 4th tick / peak, something like that).
For now I just set it at about the middle of the scale - truck is running better than before.
Clean off the timing mark for the specs of the engine.
Now, take some White-out or Liquid paper and paint it on the timing mark on the harmonic balancer.
Now you will see it every time.

ya I painted the spot on the harmonic balancer white. I was seeing it no problem. I just couldn't read the numbers on the timing scale. how should I clean it off so I can read it without scratching it so badly that I will never be able to read it?
Use a pot scrubber or a body shop material scrubber.
You can buy a pk of 5 4x6 sheets of it at a Dollar store.
Maybe use fingernail polish for every 5 degree mark advanced.
