I have a blown up 302 in my 74 bronco. It has a 3 inch suspension lift and I was wondering what all I would need to install a 351 windsor, oil pan? alt adaptors? Hood? and an idea of what a good price for a 351w at a junk yard cost. I have a friend that can build engines but he has only built mopar stuff. I don't need anything too fancy, just an engine that will will run on the weekends. any advice would be appreciated!
It's been a long time since I did it, but if I remember correctly, I didn't have to change anything except the oil pan. I used the original air cleaner with my Holley 4barrel that was mounted on an Edelbrock streetmaster intake and it actually fit under the original hood. Just for reference, I used a 1982 351W out of a Bronco into a 1977.
bronco252, If you used an 82 351 then the water pump inlet was on the wrong side.
also throttle linkage needs to be fabed.
4 core radiator and a hood scoop is mandatory without a body lift.
The cost of rebulding a 351 is within 5% of the cost of a 302. Just trade the wornout 302 tward the core charge of the 351W and you won't be sorry.
You will also need a different fly wheel or flex plate. Out of balance on 302 is different than 351.
If your not concerned with performance, but off road some crazy **** go with a FoMoCo 2 barel carb. If you don't off road but like a mild performance gain go with a Edelbrock. If you off road AND love performance, go with an Holley -2 series Truck Avenger carb.
68 351 bronc..You are correct about the water pump, I was doing a complete rebuild and that was something I was changing out anyway. I just used the original flexplate out of the 82 so that wasn't a problem. However, I did use the original hood with no hood scoop and did not have a body lift. I think you can only do this if you use the original air cleaner like I did. I was kind of amazed that it fit on to my holley 4 barrel.
Balance on the early 302 is the same as all 351W. So you can use the balancer and the flywheel from your Bronco 302. That will allow you to use the Bronco accessories such as the water pump, alternator (with adaptors) etc.
Sorry for the mis info, I was refering to injected, 86 and up, 302s having different out of balance. 52oz. I believe.
The reason Duffs talks about different balancers on 351w is due to the 3 bolt balancers that the old Broncos came with. If you don't have a power steering pump to drive than it won't be a concern untill you do. When I went to power steeing I took my old single grove pulley to my favorite Fords only junk yard and dug through their pile for a while and found a 2 grove, 3bolt that matched. FYI, I later bought a new ProRace balancer from Jegs that is drilled for both 3 or 4 bolt pullys.
