I have placed a couple of topics on FTE and have got some really good advice. I am in the process of trying to fix them when Another Problem came to mind...
I hear a noise when driving from the rear. I sounds like when you go over the strips on the shoulder of the highway. It only lasts about a second or two, but very annoying. RRRRRRR sound.
Could anyone help? I am not mechanically inclined and see that there are people here that are 100% smarter then me in these topics.
I have a 1999 EB Exp. with the 5.4 L.
I forgot to mention that this dosn't happen all the time just every now and then.
Does it happen when shifting gears under a fairly heavy load, i.e. accelerating quickly? If so it's a very common occurrence and is probably the torque converter inside the tranny. Usually a "complete" fluid change will correct the problem.
I can just be driving on the highway or to the local sandwhich shop and just hear the RRRRRRR noise. So, I would say that it happens at high speed and sometimes lower speed. It dosn't happen all the time just periodically.
Jim has outlined the most likely cause and cure. I would also take the opportunity to change the transfer case fluid at that time as well. An often overlooked service.
