Hello guys I am new here. I am in an emergency situation because our 97 EB EXP 5.4 w/ 106,XXX miles is sputtering and shaking at idle. When I turned it on, is sounded like a harley. It was loud, sputtering and shaking. This is the first time it happens and the CEL has not turned on. I want to try to fix it first but I have no idea where to begin because I do not know what the problem could be?
Does it clear up with accelleration?
...it could be a sticking IAC valve, you can try cleaning it or replace it.
...check the DPFE unit on the drivers side front of the throttle body about the size of a deck of cards with two vacuum lines coming off the bottom of it. This pott metal piece will corrode and clog the replacement is plastic, buy the new one.
...check your PCV
...listen for vacuum leaks, split, cracked or collapsed line from PCV to IAC connections
...let us know what you can relay to us and lets take it from there.
No it doesnt clear up with acceleration. I will check the IAC but where exactly is the PCV? I am not too familiar yet with the expy engine bay. Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it and I will keep you posted.
P.S. Is this a common problem? If not, what are common problems with the expedition?
PCV is located on the same valve cover as the oil filler cap. Just in behind it (towards the fire wall) and hidden by a couple of hoses. It's like searching through the jungle, just stick your hand under the hoses and lift up.lol

Hey guys I have a late update but it turns out one of the sparkplugs popped out and thats what was causing the problems. So, we took it to get it replaced along with a tune-up since it was due for one anyway. Everything seems fine for now, but they advised me just to take it easy on the engine.
BTW, the mechanic told me that when the engine shuts off, it naturally makes a hissing sound. You can hear it if you have the hood open and have your ear towards the engine. He told me it is one or more cylinders releasing pressure once it is off, or even the freon that causes a hissing noise. Don't know if that is correct but I was just wondering if he was telling the truth or feeding me a big pile of crap?
