Smog stuff

I have a stock 400 in a f-250, and it has all of the smog stuff in it (EGR, etc). I was wondering what would happen if I took it all off. Would i get better gas mileage and/or power?

Thanks !

Mike

My '79 351M has the big valve on the front of the manifold plugged. No smog pump at all. Doesn't seem to make any difference in power, but runs fine. I can't say on the mileage.

If you remove the EGR system without modifying the distributor the engine will ping. There are many threads about this here.

Ok so the general concensus seems to be that I will get pinging if I disconnect the EGR and don't jet the carb so it is less lean. Would there be an advantage to doing this ? I don't really care whether my power goes up or down, but I am interested in what it would do to my gas mileage...would it go up or down ?
Thanks
Mike

Don't mess with the carb. The distributor is where you need adjustments. Your mileage is not going to change much any way you go. You can make it go down very easy tho if you mess with it much tho.

You can eliminate most or all of the ping caused by disabling the EGR if you:
1. Rejet the carb to enrich the mixture.
2. Adjust the vacuum advance sensitivity.

If done correctly, enriching the fuel mixture will increase power and reduce fuel mileage.

If you still have excessive ping after doing those, you can get the distributor "re-curved" (i.e., change the mechanical and vacuum advance rates).

I honestly don't think it's worth messing with. These engines were pretty much made to run with EGR, and rejetting\recurving may be more trouble than they are worth considering the often-negligible gains and potential problems of removing EGR. Not everyone shares the same experiences, but as I always say, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I eliminated the ping on one engine by just resetting the distributor, both mech and vacuum advance. I did not touch the carb jets. My mileage increased by 2+ MPG.

Thanks for the info guys...I think I'll hold off on touching anything until I look into it more...if I could get a couple more miles/gallon, i think it'd be worth it, but it sounds like there really is no guarantee. Maybe when the weather starts cooperating I'll tinker a bit !
