I have an '80 F150 with a 302. In the last 2 months I have blown 3 coils. It's about to drive me insane. A mechanic friend told me the only thing that can ruin a coil is too much voltage ot you just get a bad part. He also said that if it was the voltage problem, I'd be blowing light bulbs and stuff too. That hasn't happened, and I don't think I'd get 3 bad coils in a row. I didn't buy the cheap ones either. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Jul-02 AT 09:10 PM (EST)]It's OEM ignition with a Bosch coil. I checked the voltage and it varied from 6.4 to 9.2 volts when running. I also discovered that the last coil wasn't blown. I got the truck to start on this coil, but it was blowing alot of black smoke out the exhaust and it really smelled like fuel. It'll only idle for about 30 secs and then it dies unless you keep the rpm's way up. I'm runnning an Edelbrock intake and carb. Any thoughts on where I should look to next?
