im looking to pick up a early 80's f-250 with a manual transmission and a blown motor. might use it for a manual swap on my bronco. i havent had a chance to look at it and was wondering if anyone lnew what transmission this is. i bielive it is behind a inline 6. thanks for the help. hal

 

How many gears does this transmission have? Does it have an iron or aluminum case? One piece case/bellhousing, or seperate bellhousing? Is first gear a granny low or a normal 1st gear ratio? Does the shifter come out the top of the tranny or does it mount off the side?

Common granny gear 4speeds used in these trucks are the Borg Warner T18, T19, and New Process NP435. All of them have iron cases with seperate bellhousings and the shifters come out the top of the trans case. The NP435 has an aluminum top cover and the BW's have iron top covers. The T18 and NP435 do not have synchros on 1st and reverse gears. The T19 is full-synchro. They all have PTO cover plates on the side of the case.

Common 5speeds used in these trucks are the heavy duty ZF with granny low and overdrive fifth and the light duty M5OD with overdrive fifth and a normal first gear ratio. Both have one piece aluminum case/bellhousings and hydraulic clutch setup. The ZF has a PTO cover plate, the M5OD doesn't. I you're looking to use either of these one-piece case trannys with your motor, make sure the motor they are conncted to has the same bellhousing bolt pattern as yours. Big blocks and small blocks use different patterns and the transmissions do not interchange.

 

thanks for the info. going to look at it this weekend. i know it will match up to my 302. just hoping its a np-435.
