Hi! I need help. I am wanting to increase horsepower and torque in my truck. It is an 86 f-150 4x4 with a 5.0efi. Would like to get 300 horse and 350 lb ft of torque. Do not know stock ratings or the best and cheapest ways to achieve this. Need help!
I hope you got alot of money! To get 300 hp out of a 5.0l can be done, but it will cost you. You just got to do ALL the expensive hotrod stuff, and do it right.
Dan's right, horsepower = $$$$.
Maybe TorqueKing will mosey by and see this post (or you might send him a private message). He's the man when it comes to wringing more ponies out of a 302. Must have deep pockets too.......lol.
Thanks for the input fella's, sounds like it would be better to find a 351 but are they that much better than the 302 and how hard are they to find with computer and in one peice? I have headers and flowmasters for the 302.Would it be best just to regear it to make the truck feel more torqish.Installing bigger tires anyhow.
You could install a nitrous kit. There are plently of kits for the 5.0 out there. Just don't get too agressive with the HP gains or you could do some damage. A 75 to 100 HP kit would probably be the max for a stock engine with cast pistons.
I hate to say it, but I'm pretty sure that '86 has flat top pistons, so none of the big HP and Torque heads will fit it, the valves will collide with the pistons. You could put a better cam in it, but the bigger cam will create more valve lift, again causing you pistons to hit the valves. It's very, very easy and relatively inexpensive to have 350 HP and 375 ft*lbs of torque in a 302 that still gets better than stock gas milage, but you gotta have pistons with valve reliefs. If you really wanna kick in the pants, swap your rear end ratio for 3.90's or 4.10's. It will ruin your highway cruisability, but it'll really feel like a shot in the butt around town! If you have a motor that isn't flat top pistons, then let me know, and I can give you the recipe for some serious HP, but it's a lost cause with that flat top motor. The '86 as I understand is a great motor in stock trim, but it's difficult to modify without swaying the tightrope of the delicate piston to valve clearance. One thing I know you can do is add an MSD ignition box, a 6A box and a Blaster II coil. It will improve your milage, and performance, not even a big "seat of the pants" feel, but you'll see a slight increase at the pump. Swap in a later 302 ('87-'93) roller motor, and you're about $1500 away from 350 HP and 375 ft*lbs of torque. I can give you a detailed parts list if you're interested, I did it with a flat-tappet cam. TK

I am interested in the parts list, anthingwill help. the only way I know to check the pistons is to tear the motor apart. is it possible to get the serial no. off of the motor and check with Ford to find out? Also how hard is it to find a 302 roller? I'm not really interested in nos,it is an every day driver and i would like the power there at all times.I would like to show my father how a ol' Ford can still woop a high dollar chevy thanks for the input.
The quickest and cheapest way to some serious Chevy-whipping HP seems to me like Ford's GT-40 short block, which sells for $1300 in Jegs or Summit. Add some killer heads like World's Windsor Jr's ($800), and a Comp Xtreme Roller 258 cam ($240), then throw on some headers ($100) and roller rockers ($170) and hardened pushrods ($28), keep your stock intake and EFI, and you'll be rocking hard with about 350 HP and nearly 400 ft*lbs of torque. I'm actually about to use this exact combo, so gimme about a month, and I'll tell you how good it really is! TK
How bout supercharging or turbocharging it? I believe that the compreession is low enough to be able to do this.
