engine swap

hey, i have a 85 ford f150 4x4 and the inline six is almost shot. i was wondering what v8 would be the simplest and what year engine will work. I was think 351w but i don't know how difficult this will be. It is a four speed so will the tranny and bellhousing work. how big of a problem is the wireing. Thanks

if yours is injected, i think the wiring all comes out in one big bundle. i am not sure because i dont mess with injected vehicles. your tranny and bellhousing will work. you will have to change motor stands and exhaust for sure. probably be a difference in clutch linkage also. motor stands from 302-351w, and 351c-400 will work for you. a donor truck would be your best bet, if you can find one where you live.

you will have to change the bellhousing to use the 351m. big block bolt pattern.

thanks, so will the engine mounts for a 302 work for a 351and how about the radator and the brakets on the engine. i might have a truck that i could get with a blew up 302 for the parts to drop a v8 in. then i could look for a 351w to drop in. So if any of this combo would work that would be great.any help would be great.

engine brackets are different. 351w is wider than 302. rad should work ok. watch the engine year, ford changed the balance weight in i think 83-84.

the ports are on the opposite sides on the I-6 and the V8 trucks...needs radiator for V8....as for wiring, all sensors except the tach are the same from what I've seen on my 2 trucks. I might be getting looney, but I'm starting to prefer my I-6 truck!

Post engine swap

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Aug-02 AT 11:33 AM (EST)]I did an engine swap in my 81 F100. Went from a IL-6 to a 68 302 & used the manual trans 3sp w/OD. I had to buy frame extentions before the motor mounts would match up, (the 302 motor mounts set back futher) got them from local Ford dealer about $75.00. I used the radiator that I had, but had to buy new upper & lower hoses that would reach the radiator. As for the trans, I was able to use the one I had, but I did have to shorten the input shaft about 2 1/2 inches before it would bolt up. (You may want to consider a different tans before cutting the imput shaft) Don't forget to install a pilot bearing in the crank for the manual trans. The only other thing that I had to do was to purchase a new distributor for the 302 since I did not have one. I got one from Auto Zone for an 81 F100 w/302, it pluged right up to the DuraSpark ingintion system.
