i recently purchases a 1970 f-100 sport custom long box. the rear and probably the front cab mounts are all rusted out so the cab sags in the back. the front fender inner aprons are rusted and one is comletely broke off. the rest of the truck looks alright except for small rust on the bottom of the doors. it has a rebuilt 360, a 3 speed racing tranny and a racing 4:11 rear end which are also fairly new, only 20,000 miles. i have plans on where the truck is going which is slammed with air suspensin with big rims probably a deep purple paint job, i would like to swap out the engine with a 460 cobra jet crate engine and maybe swap to a different tranny. time on this project is not really a concern, i just want to build a truck for me. right now i do not have a garage to work in but i am trying to get into one. i have done a lot of mechanic work, lots of welding, and a fair amount of body work so i would like to do as much of the work as i can. i would like help on whether or not this truck is worth the work and any tips in the cab mount replacement and just any tips on this project thanks. art
Cab mounts can be had from a number of suppliers- LMC, Dennis Carpenter, most places that advertise '67-'72 Fords. You'll probably need to fix a least part of the floors, too, if the mounts are that bad. Is it worth it? That depends on what's available in your part of the country, and what you're willing to do. Here in FL, I would look for a better body, even if it had no drivetrain, cuz here they're available, and I hate body work. If you're in the 'rust belt' up north, that might be considered a solid truck. While you're doin' all that hoppin' up and slammin', make sure you upgrade to disc brakes. Hate to see you wrap a pretty truck around a tree for lack of upgrades. It's easy to swap in disc brakes (and power steering) from a mid to late '70's donor truck. And don't forget to post pictures as you build it!
Art, Don't do anything to it. You have tooooo much to do to do it with that truck. Sounds like you want to go all the way to the chassis and build it out. I recommend making a plan and finding a truck as rust free as you can to do the project with. Take it from someone that has been there. There are enough stumbling points along the way not to start out with a lot of known issues. IMHO
hey thanks for your help. under further inspection only the front cab mounts, both inner aprons, and part of the floor need replaced. all the other was just surface rust and is good clean metal underneath. i found the cab mounts for about 25 bucks each but some help with the inner aprons would help. also what welder would you recomend on purchasing for body work? hey thanks and i will keep you informed.
