Somehow, I cannot envision any airlines wasting any space where a seat could be installed, my local and only version of air transport has seats in the isles. IMHO.

About 60 airports around the world, including a dozen in the USA, are spending millions to prepare for the arrival of the A380. Los Angeles International alone is spending $53 million on new jetways, loading areas and airfield improvements.

that was from the USATODAY article

The main concern for airports is to widen the runways and taxiways...the outboard engines extend beyond any paved area right now. They'd be suckin' up taxiway signs, chunks of sod, and a few rabbits hiding in the grass. Memphis has already added a widened center runway and is working on the taxiways and parking areas. They'll see the A380 in 2008.

My company is the launch customer for the cargo version. Operating this aircraft will replace 2.5 of the type we currently fly. With landing slots in Asia (and all other countries) limited, it makes sense to pack one huge airplane rather than launch multiple flights and waste the slots.

But I don't think I'd be too excited as one of the 600 crammed into the pax version, that's just too much "humanity" in one vessel!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Boeing have a double decker in design a few years ago? I think it was the original version of the 777, but I could be wrong. And having never actually seen a 777, it could be a double decker without me knowing it! I live in Manitoba, and the only international airport in the province is in Winnipeg. I doubt if they get many bigs planes there, mainly A320's, 727's etc. There aren't many direct flights to Winnipeg, everything is routed through somewhere else. Any trans atlantic flights come through Toronto, and any trans pacific flights come through Vancouver or LA. And flights south to Mexico and further go through Chicago. I just read the list of carriers that bought the new A380, and of them, I'd only fly 2, maybe 3. (Quantas, Virgin Atlantic, and Air France) One things for sure, Air Canada won't be getting one soon!

I saw somewhere the impact that it could have on airports. They state one A380 is equal to two jumbos now and that the sirports are not going to be ready to handle the 555 people on one airplane let alone if three or four of them hit at one time. Look at LAX and count how many 747 ate there at any given time. I also wonder what the weight will do to the old concrete.

I have serious doubts about their viability also. It is my understanding only one airport in the U.S. is currently capable of handling them, can't imagine airports making huge capital investments for planes that don't exist while they can't keep track of my luggage now. They might be good for transcontinental flights, but intercontinental flights would make them useless, long lines to load, unload, and long waits for luggage (thee hours of boarding and unboarding for an hour flight?). No passenger service in the US has made an order, yet. The BIG jet liners have been hurting for a while, Boeing hasn't sold a 747 in two years. UPS and FedEx both have orders in for two A380s each as cargo planes, but I'm sure it's contengent upon several airports making upgrades so that they can used in more then one or two cities.

Actually, FedEx placed launch orders for 10 A380's and option for 10 more over 2 years ago. UPS just recently made the same order.

Don...can Phily handle them? When do you think one of those monsters will be sailing over with the UPS logo on the tail, or any for that matter? I still think that this concept is a little too grandiose. I have a feeling we'll be reading about this soon, and it will all be negative financial feedback.

jdmorg...I don't think you'll EVER see one in PHL. Our DC10's sink into the taxiways as it is!! The airport being built on a swamp sure doesn't help the situation!!

I know FedEx is going to operate them out of Memphis and Anchorage, but I can't speak for the "brothers in brown" (although I did see Louisville [their hub] listed in the USA Today article).

The only time I want to see one of these beasts is when I look up and it is 35,000 feet away!!
