Sorry if this isn`t the right place to post this, but here goes.I am looking for some directions to build one of those 12V generators from a lawn mower engine, altinator, and what ever else I might need? I have enough junk laying around here and should be able to put one together. Can`t afford to buy gas powered generator to power a charger in the field!!
Your biggest problem will be coordinating engine/alternator speeds with the right pulleys and belt. If the mower engine has a horizontal shaft, that would sure make it easier to build. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out!
we use them at work i think our is a 6 hp gas engine and it turns two generators it uses amp meters and rotary switches does a great job at jump starting diesels with dead batteries
With a few modifications that thing would work as a mobile arc welder too. A little searching should find a page that explains how to turn an alternator into a welder; but basically you need to remove the regulator, then power the field from a battery with a rheostat in series to control the field current and hence the welding current. It probably helps to have some kind of inductor in series with the output to help stabilize the arc. Old alternators are cheap enough; you could run two off the same engine, set up one as a charger and the other for welding.
