I'm new to the site and am looking forward to some advice. Here's my first question.
I have a 350, V-10 with 3.73. I tow a fifth wheel trailer and feel I would like to change rear gears. Is this possible, plausible and should it be 4.10 or 4.30?
Also what type of price would I be looking at?
I would go w/4:30's.The set should cost 200-300, and maybe 400 to install.I'm sure someone else will chime in with some hard numbers.I'm lucky because my friend is Ford certified to change gears and such.I want 4:56's though.
What size tires are you or do you plan on running? Stock?
Is your truck a 4x4 or 2x4? A 4x4 will cost considerably more to swap gears than the 2x4 becuase you gotta change both. Most pay over $1K to swap gears in a 4x4.
My vote is for 4.30s unless you are running tires larger than stock, then I'd look at the 4.56s.
Running stock tires and 2wd. Some have told me that the change will mess up how the truck runs "that they never get it right" Are these just horror stories?
as long as you have them installed by a qualified mechanic you will not have any problems, with the 7.3 i would say go with the 4.10
as far as price gears run 200-250 a set and install from 200 to 500
I think the 4.30's are the best idea. I don't think I will gain that much with the 4.10. The quotes I've gotten from the two Ford houses are $1400 and $1500. They think it might be higher. The "they" i quoted before was a mechanic from a local independent shop and one from a Ford house.
I just don't want to burn out something towing up a mountain with the 3.73's especially when I find out that most don't suffer much in the mpg area switching the rear gears. Besides is changes the GCWR from 17,000 to 20,000. I'm running about 17,350 (weighed by DPS officer. Not officially but as a favor)
The two estimates talk about changing axels, cases, etc. Are these about right or are they trying to get a few more bucks?

I don't agree with the axle/casing changing part, but if you're interested contact Preston's Auto in Texarkana. He's been a gear-swapping junky for years. Phone 903 793-0096
And welcome to FTE
And ease on down to the Texas Chapter and darken our door...

Might be a good place to sit around and brag big...and tell lies...
I don't have a 4wheeler yet, but I have a camera and a good lawn chair....
Might not get to stay the entire weekend, either, but that ain't no big thang...it's the bragging and lying that's takes front row - then the mudding and drinking and chasing wild women...whoa! okay....I'm awright, now.
