Does anyone know where you can buy those expensive wire crimpers?

Paul,

How expensive you talking. Want to go $450 for a set of three? You don't need anything crazy. George and I talk about the good ones now and then. But neither of us has been willing to pull the trigger yet.

Regarding solder vs crimp. What Steve said. OEM doesn't solder, but they do have the NASA crimping tools. I think a regular guy should solder the real important stuff, and crimp everything else with a $30 pair of crimpers. Lunatics like me will continue to solder everything, and take too long to finish a truck.

Klein has some good crimpers -the forged (not stamped) style. Identical to those sold under several other names. Home Depot has Klein stuff, or just follow an electrician; most electrical wholesalers seem to sell Klein.

You can get them from Newark using the part numbers in my earlier post. As others have said, if you use them correctly, they work first time and every time. They are precision tools made to work on stuff that can't fail or somebody has a really, really bad day. They are a bit too costly for me to purchase personally, though. Fortunately, I have access to a set I don't own.

3M makes a insulation-piercing wire tap that is moisture resistant. The samples I have are for 18-14 gauge wire. 3M part number is #804. McMaster-Carr part number is 706k32. No stripping is required and they work on stranded and solid conductors. The moisture resistance comes from a gel that insulates and seals the connection. UL likes them.

Just bought a new for me racheting crimper at Auto Zone; will test soon. Cost $25.
Name on the yellow handle is "conduct titel", I believe.

ya need a different one for each size!!! 'Course, one bad crimp from a cheap tool on a $10,000 aircraft (or artillery) subsystem can make a complete set of these seem like a bargain at work. A full set is a little steep for me at home.

Newark Electronics (www.newark.com)

All items can be ordered in quantities as small as one each according to Newark's web site. Enjoy! Nothing like part numbers to brighten my day.
Earl, do you type, or paste, all this information into the posts ??

You did it for me and I appreciate it a lot. And if you ever needed somebody on this forum to lay in the snow and make an oil change tech video, I bet you'd get one pretty quick.

Please tell me you don't need the tape. Man it's cold out there.

Kinda hairy, and a scar on one knee, but yea, my legs are pretty nice. Good enough for an oil change video anyway.

I take great pride in the fact that I had nothing whatsoever to do with the steady and complete degradation of this thread.
