This started about two weeks ago. Truck cranks & runs fine sitting still, but I noticed driving to and from work(morn. and eve.) that my dash lights dim when i turn on headlights and on the road headlights and dash flicker just a little.
Help Please! btw 1986 f150 300 6 tfi ign.
Use a meter at the battery with the engine running and the headlights on. If the reading fluctuates in rhythm with the flickering lights, then your problem is with the voltage regulator &/or it's wiring.
If not, then you should look at the headlight switch & it's wiring plug for any loose contacts &/or cooked wires. Also, check the battery connections real closely and at both ends of all the cables.
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it !

You also might want to check and make sure the regulator has a good connection to the sheetmetal, and or the sheetmetal has a ground strap to the engine block. The regulator having a bad ground can cause it to go haywire sometimes.
Thanks Deal,Franklin i'll try meter n headlights first. Yep i thought about trying a headlight switch, too. This may not make a difference, but yesterday eve. the dash lights just went off for about 30 seconds and came back on. I never thought you could have too much ground, so i may just try adding a ground strap after some of the other stuff( kinda save it for last, i guess) just to help isolate the prob. some.
Hey and thanks for your responses too, FTE has been some great help with my war horse!
