Hey fellas, A friend of mine just bought a 73 f-250 and it has a 390 w/ a standard tranny, it has a dana 60 in the rear, but he doesent know what axle is in the front, he told me it has drums in the front, I assumed that ford stopped putting drums in the front back in the sixties, am I wrong?
I havent seen the truck but he tells me it looks like a dana 60 front but I have never heard of a drum brake dana 60.
It's probably a Dana44. The diff cover bolts on a Dana44 use a 1/2" wrench. The Dana60 cover bolts use a 9/16" wrench. Or just measure the size of the housing on the rear Dana60 and compare it to the size of the front housing. Dana44 housing is smaller.
Ford used drum brakes for awhile into the 1970's. Broncos didn't get disc brakes untill '76. I think the F250 4x4's got discs in '75 or '76, not sure.
I *think* the last year of the narrow-frame 'highboy' F250 4x4 had disc brakes. If that is true, then that axle should bolt in to your truck. Might want to ask about it in the Offroad forum, there are a few guys there running the old highboys.
There isn't any practicle way to convert a drum to a disc. Low pinion 60's or 44's use turning bearings and disc fronts use ball joints. You would have to cut the hole outers off a high or low pinion disc front, too much work & you would be junking the axle you realy needed.
